STM lenses are designed for movie recording, with the goal of providing smooth and silent focusing. Unlike its predecessor, the STM version of the 55-250 has internal focusing. You'll be able to pick up the 55-250 STM lens in late September for $350. It's also a safe bet that the 55-250 STM will come bundled with Canon DSLRs in the near future.

The rear focusing system, high-speed CPU, and an enhanced AF algorithm also contribute to quickened overall AF speeds. Full-time manual focus is also supported to permit fine-tuning of focus even while working in AF modes. Additionally, the front lens section does not rotate during focusing to better facilitate the use of polarizing filters.

Canon EF-S 55-250 F4-5.6 IS STM lens. The optical construction of the lens employs one ultra-low dispersion glass element to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range while also enhancing contrast and clarity. Optimized lens coatings have also been applied to ensure color fidelity by countering the effects of lens flare and ghosting.

Long-reaching zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 88-400mm, covering portrait-length to telephoto perspectives. Optical image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 shutter speed steps to benefit shooting handheld in dim lighting and with greater zoom magnifications.

The STM stepping focus motor produces near-silent, smooth, and quick autofocus performance that is well-suited to video applications. One ultra-low dispersion element helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion while also contributing to greater image sharpness, contrast, and clarity. Enhanced lens coatings minimize flare and ghosting in order to produce true colors with maintained contrast.

A minimum focusing distance of 2.8′ throughout the zoom range and a maximum magnification of 0.29x at the telephoto end enables working with close-up subject matter.

A seven-blade circular aperture helps to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus quality to benefit selective focus and shallow depth of field imagery.

 The latest is we’ll see this lens announced within the next 12 months. As always, nailing down lens announcement dates is near impossible with Canon. An EF 14-24 f/2.8L would complete a pretty remarkable range of lenses in the Canon lineup along with the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, EF 70-200 f/2.8L II & the unannounced EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x.  

No canon ultra wide zoom can match it’s image quality. I can’t imagine enthusiasm and demand for such Canon Ultra Wide among canon shooters. Latest rumor and patent is suggesting, a Canon EF 14-24 f/2.8L lens announcement within the next 12 months. As always, lens prediction is tough. unable to use regular screw in polarizer filter due to lack of front filter thread. A lens cannot be patent, but an optical design can be patent.

The quality build of this lens is quite decent with good quality plastic. The inside of the tube lens extends slightly when focusing towards close range but the front element does not rotate - using a polarizer because it's no problem. Operating the focus ring is not all that impressive - typical for many of the Canon lens feels a little itching. Thanks to a small number of elements is very fast AF despite conventional micro motor.


Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 lens wide open in the middle with a sharp little noticeable improvement when stopped down. Wide angle showed tenderness in the body even FOVCF 1.6 for a plane curve sharp focus. Conclusion
I came into this review worried I wouldn’t be able to make enough good images with it since I had the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II with me. Thankfully I was wrong!

For the purpose of outdoor everyday photography, including a safari, this is a fabulous lens. With the current landscape of lens pricing, I don’t think it’s overpriced. It’ll start dropping in price over the next few months. It’ll also be a lens that’ll show up in rebate programs.

This probably isn’t a lens for weddings, portraits, lowlight or indoor sports (unless it’s well lit or strobed) unless you have no other option. It will be a great lens for outdoor work, safaris, outdoor sports, zoos, kids and general travel shooting.

Canon Lens EF-S 15-60 f/2.8 IS will be Coming May 2011. A replacement of the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS could take the form of an EF-S 15-60 f/2.8 IS. It would have the same build quality of the current 15-85. May 2011 was mentioned for an announcement.


That's the kind of lens expected by many people, but i'm sure some of you will hardly believe it, believing that ef-s is dead, even though canon always said the opposite.

Anyway, this seems all logical when you analyse it :
After the 28-135 IS, the 24-105 L IS came
After the 17-85 IS, the 15-60 L IS comes
