Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZE Quick Review

Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZE Quick Review. The Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZE is one of the few all-time lens classics. The build quality of the full-metal Zeiss (brass with chromium-plated brass front bayonet) is super.

The T* 85mm f/1.4 extends slightly by about 1cm when focusing towards close distances. The rather long min. focus distance of 1m is a bit disappointing for a brand new lens.

Chromatic aberrations (color shadows at harsh contrast transitions) are very moderate varying between an average pixel width of 0.7px and 0.4px at the image borders. Similar to the
Canon 85mm f/1.2L USM the Zeiss suffers somewhat from purple fringing at large apertures.

alternatives to Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 lens, which makes selection process so much harder. Canon's own 85mm f/1.2L USM is a superb, albeit very expensive, choice for practical photographer, as is the slightly slwoer but more reasonably priced Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM.
